Chaotic first year won't alter Broncos coach McDaniels' approach - The Denver Post

Good article from Mike Klis in the Sunday Denver Post about Josh McDaniels and how he plans to change his approach (or not) in his second year. McDaniels was resoundly criticized by many national media members, including Shannon Sharpe and Mark Schlereth. However, he still has the strong support of Pat Bowlen and Joe Ellis. Surprisingly, the only thing that McDaniels seems to regret from the first year was engaging the Chargers in trash talk before the Chargers destroyed Denver, in Denver, in the second half of the season.

New NFL Overtime Rules Approved for Playoffs

This may be irrelevant to the Broncos as long as Josh Mcdaniels is the head coach. However, the NFL owners have approved a change to the overtime rules for the playoffs starting next season:

If the team that starts with the ball scores a touchdown immediately, the game is over. However, If the team that starts with the ball kicks a field goal, the other team gets the ball and has a chance to either tie the game with a field goal or score a touchdown themselves to win the game outright. If the game is still tied after that, play will continue under the current sudden-death rules.

The owners may still decide to change the rule for the regular season as well. This decision would occur at their meeting in May.

Broncos Cut Chris Simms

Just one day after trading for Brady Quinn, and shortly after Josh McDaniels praised Chris Simms' work ethic, the Broncos have cut Chris Simms. This is not a surprising move. Simms was terrible in his limited playing time last season and there is little reason to believe he could have competed for the backup job, much less the starting job.

It will be interesting to see if any other teams will take a flyer on Chris Simms. However, I wouldn't be surprised if his NFL career is over.

Hillis and draft picks traded to Browns for Brady Quinn

Josh mcdaniels killed two birds with one stone today by trading peyton
hillis and two draft picks to Cleveland for QB Brady Quinn. Quinn
will compete with Kyle orton for the starting qb job. Trading hillis
rids mcdaniels of a hardworking, previously very productive player who
he, for reasons unknown, refused to put on the field.

Broncos release LB Andra Davis - The Denver Post

The BRoncos released linebacker Andra Davis yesterday. Davis had one more year on his deal and would have been paid 1.56 million this season. This is a strange decision, in my opintion. Davis started 13 of 16 games last year and was third on the team in tackles. So, even if he was not going to be a starter (if the Broncos signed or drafted a new LB), he would have been a very servicable backup at a cheap price.

Andra Davis is not a foundation upon which you build a defense, but this move raises more questions about what sort of plan McDaniels and Xanders have, if any.

McDaniels returns to the Patriots well... Broncos sign defensive end Jarvis Green - The Denver Post

As reported on Yahoo, The Broncos have signed yet another former New England player, this time inking defensive end Jarvis Green in free agency. Josh McDaniels continues to return to the New England well for players. This raises a question, however - why is Bill Belichick letting these players leave? Is McDaniels overpaying for inferior players. Just becuase they are from New England, doesn't mean they are great players.

Denver Broncos Tender Dumervil,Orton, Marshall, Scheffler, and Khuper

Today, the Broncos offered tenders to our key free agents, as expected

Elvis Dumervil received a first and third round tender meaning any team that tried to sign him would have to give Denver a first and third round pick.

First round tenders were offered to Orton, Marshall, and Chris Khuper.

Tony Scheffler received a third round tender.

Denver has the chance to match any offer that any of these players receive. If they don't receive any other offers, Denver will get each for a year long contract, unless a longer term deal is worked out. Any longer term deals seem unlikely given the labor uncertainty surrounding the NFL.
