With the 25th pick...

The broncos surprised everybody and traded three picks to the Ravens
for the 25th pick to select Tim Tebow. Tebow saw his stock rise
dramatically in recent weeks. Immediately after the offseason, many
were doubting that tebow would go before the later rounds but he had
recently impressed teams enough with his work to change his throwing
motion and with his intangibles to become a first round pick.

This is the dream situation for mcdaniels because tebow is a smart,
tough, team player who is imminentky coachable. Mcdaniels no doubt
sees Jim as a player that he can mold into denver's long term answer
at QB. This should be a clear signal to Kyle orton that he is just
keeping the seat warm. Jimmy clausen and colt McCoy are still on the
board after the first round.

  1. You're an idiot if you aren't panning this trade and pick.

Tebow sucks. McDaniels sucks harder. What an abortion this franchise has become.

  2. Tim Tebow?!?!?!?! Really, we get rid of Brandon Marshal and then waste a first round pick on Tebow?!?! Here is how I would call it if I were Jim Rome: hello...what up....I..am..Jim Rome...I..have..a..great..Friday show for you...but..first...here's...what..I'm..burning on.."Dear Broncos, Tim Tebow?!?! Great waste of scrilla and 1st round pick and way to not replace Brandon Marshal..this is a move even Al Davis wouldn't make. You better win soon because even Shanahan only wasted a 4th rounder on Maurice Clarett not a 1st rounder and he won Superbowls, to allow himself that privledge.

  4. As a lifelong Broncos fan, I can honestly say, we can no longer laugh at the Raiders for all their dumb picks. This is Jamarcus Russell (Part 2).

  6. Great deal for the Ravins.

#1) Why didn't MJ just select Tebow at 11th and not give anything away? #2) Even though JM's world is different then the 'REAL WORLD' does JM really think he'll be still employed by the Broncos when Tebow is slated to be ready in the two NFL seasons ALL NFL scouts say he needs to develop? #3) Who will the number 1 receiver be for ANY QB to throw to? Royal, like Orton, is the odd man of McDaniels favorites and will most likely be relegated to the Number 3 position which means Gaffney right now is Joshes #1 guy who is NOT a first tier wideout. #4.) Will there be struggles in the dink and dunk passing attack this year?

My prediction is TeBow will, at some point, be 'rushed' into the starting lineup. Will he really be ready and who does he have to throw to? If the defense picks up where it left off last year, struggling and, the O-line can't move a defensive line to pick up a third and very short McDaniels better start packing sooner rather than later because not even Bowlen will have patience for Joshy boy. And what of Tebow? will the next coach see him as anything but a back up?

All I can say is Josh McDaniels can ill afford anything less then a 9 and 5 season, and that's probably giving him more leeway than he deserves.

  7. McDaniels didn't pick tebow at 11 because with all of the trades they made, in the end they ended up with two first round picks (22nd and 24th) plus an extra third round pick.

Thomas will be the #1 receiver, I would think. He may not start in that slot, but certainly he was drafted to be a number 1.

WRs and QBs in the first round are high risk/high reward type picks. If Tebow and thomas are busts, this sets the Broncos back quite a bit, versus safer picks to solidify and strengthen the trenches. If they are successes, then Denver will be set for the next decade. The odds are more likely that they will be busts, but such is the nature of the draft.

  8. Tommy Maddox all over again! You can't take a college QB and start teaching him to throw all over again. Even if he manages to do it, his accuracy would take years to be acceptable. And his arm strength is not likely to improve. Tebow is a college QB who will never succeed at the NFL level. He simply doesn't have the tools.

  9. LPM,

Thomas may not be a bust, but remember he comes from a triple option college offense with a running focus. when they threw the ball it was almost always off of a play fake, and precise route running was not a priority. It will take Thomas a long time to get up to speed with an NFL router tree. He is a big fast receiver who needs a ton of coaching to be an NFL #1 WR. Could take several years. But at least like Tebow, he should eventually be productive in the NFL. Tebow might want to get himself a really good clipboard right now and start learning how to coach.

  13. To LPM:

    Broncos 'FIRST' round picks?

Are they 'TRULY' first round picks?

    Seriously.

Oh yeah, I can see McD putting Thomas in as the starter. (McD logic at work) but let's see how Thomas adjusts to NFL db's this same year.

I guess, if McD plans on running a wild cat O Tebow is 1st round material?

  14. Same Pats fan here, who commented pre-draft. The Pats' drafts from 2005->2008 weren't that great. However, I would argue that a lot of those drafts were f'd up by McDaniels and Pioli.
Josh McKid personally scouted and pushed for WR Chad Jackson, QB Kevin O'Connell, RB Laurence Maroney, TE Dave Thomas, etc. It's clear McDaniels has zero eye for talent, which is why Belichick ignored his draft workouts in 2007 and traded for offensive players like Moss and Welker. Meanwhile, the defense was ignored for too long, the Pats were drafting very different from the blue collar, non-skill-position players they picked from 2001-2004.
You can see that with McKid now in Denver and Pioli in KC, Belichick's true style is back the past two drafts focusing on defensive studs and the trenches, and it is awesome. Somehow the Pats started with 4 picks in the first 3 rounds, and ended up with 5 players PLUS a high Carolina 2nd rounder next year!
I feel sorry for Broncos fans, I have a lot of respect for the fans in Colorado, and how tough you always played us, but somehow you're stuck with McKid who is destroying your franchise like he almost did the Pats dynasty.

  15. orton Fan: I agree with you. I think what is most disturbing about McDaniels draft strategy is that he drafts as though he has a special bit of information that the rest of the league is missing. If this is true, he would be much more savvy to let hidden gems fall to him in later rounds and still get impact players early. Terrell Davis was a sixth round pick - maybe shanahan did not know quite how good Terrell Davis would be, but he didn't draft him before he needed to. The major example of Shanahan completely overdrafting was Maurice Clarett - which of course turned out terribly.
