Josh McDaniels Management Style

In light of the recent benchings of both Brandon Marshall and Tony Scheffler, there are two new reasons to question Josh McDaniels' management and leadership style.

All was well when Denver was 6-0, but now that the team has gone 2-7 in the last 9, Josh McDaniels seems to be losing control and the only thing he knows to do is bench players.

Tony Scheffler, a player who under Mike Shanahan was a hard worker and strong contributor, has been benched for what we now know is some sort of undisclosed attitude problems. Could these be the same type of attitude problems that have led to Peyton Hillis being relegated to the bench? Hard to say.

Now, we have Brandon Marshall being benched because Josh McDaniels questions the severity of Marshall's hamstring injury. By benching Scheffler and Marshall, McDaniels has removed two strong offensive weapons. It's lucky Denver is playing Kansas City on Sunday, because against a more worthy opponent these two losses may be too difficult to overcome. As it is, Kansas City will have a lot less to worry about and should not be overlooked.

Back to the point of this post - why is Josh McDaniels so quick to suspend players. To me, that may indicate a coach who is losing control of the team and has to resort to draconian methods to assert his power. I also think it was a big mistake for McDaniels to publicly accuse Marshall of faking the severity of an injury. If I were a player in the NFL, I would look at that behavior and think twice before signing with Denver.

Josh "My Way or the High Way" McDaniels seems a little immature to me. Are the Broncos spinning out of control? Tomorow is a must win game to have a chance to make the playoffs, but it is probably more of a must win to quell the discontent that will reverberate throughout Denver if the Broncos go into the off-season having finished 2-8.

There have been calls for me to change the name of this blog back to Fire Josh McDaniels Now. It's definitely something I am considering.

  1. Maybe Scheffler's "attitude" stems from his lack of use during the last nine games. Maybe Scheffler is sick of losing, sick of the collapses each year, and just sick of losing. Yeah, I can see how this attitude could be a problem.

And Brandon Marshall? Who are we to expect McD to have to deal with a prima donna receiver? And in the NFL no less! I mean B-Marsh is the only one, right?

I wanted to give McDaniel's chance when he was hired, but now I want him gone before he does more damage. A lot of people in the NFL wanted to play for Shannahan. Good luck getting any kind of talent in Denver with this petulant punk at the helm.

  2. I'll just come out and say it. I am a Chargers fan from San Diego. I want the Broncos to keep McDaniels. With that idiot in charge, the Broncos will never win anything of importance. He isn't team first, he is McDaniels first.

  3. Well, I guess I gave Josh McDaniels early credit for handling the Marshall situation.

Like I posted earlier I gave McD the benefit of the doubt and supported his decisions like doing Cutler a favor and send him packing, while biting my tongue on so many other things. Like for the LIMITED playbook he created all season long.

It's clear to me anyway, Josh McDaniels came to Denver with the understanding he was going to completely install a new team of HIS GUYS and his guys ONLY.

McDaniels will have a long row to hoe with the departure of who I would assume will be Hillis, Orton Royal, Stokely, Marshall, Scheffler and god knows who else on defense.

    As a side note...
If I was Carolina I would dump Mr. Int Jake Delhomme and sign Orton. At least he would be allowed to 'actually' throw the ball down field to those receivers, giving Broncos fans who hate him no more excuses as he leads that team to the playoffs next year.

  4. McDaniels is a freakin' idiot. Had the Broncos made the SAME changes they made on D (brining in Nolan, signing Dawkins, etc.) and kept Cutler and Shanahan they would have been representing the AFC in the Super Bowl.

As it is Jay Cutler managed to LEAD the lowly Bears to more points scored on offense, than Orton bumbled the Broncos offense to score. You can't even begin to compare the dearth of talent along the Bears offensive line, and the complete absence of talented skill position players to the Broncos's units.

Clady is the best left tackle in the game. Harris is one of the best young right tackles in the game. The interior of the Broncos o-line was considered one of the league's best, until McDaniels decided it didn't fit his "system" (translation: his bust of a running back in Moreno couldn't average but around 2.9 yards per carry).

The Broncos are irrelevant. I've had Broncos season tickets since '93 and I actually rooted against the Broncos every game this season. I used to LOVE the Broncos. Elway was my hero. Darrent Williams, and Tyrone Braxton were two of my favorite players (all heart). I loved watching the parade of runing backs put up numbers (Gary, Anderson, Droughns, Portis, Bell, Hillis, etc.)

Is Pat Bowlen the WORST owner in the NFL or what?

Remember he INHERITED #7 and Dan Reeves. He let Reeves try to trade Elway away (actually Reeves had the trade agreement and just needed owner approval) and this after Reeves wasted a first round draft pick on QB Tommy Maddux during the PRIME of Elway's career. Then after failing to lead the organization Bowlen fired Reeves and wasted complete multiple draft classes under Wade Phillips.

In fact considering this debacle that McDaniels has created. Alienating and trading Cutler. Alienating and about to trade Marshall. Alienating Sheffler. Alienating Ryan Clady...

considering everything that has gone on, its a fluke that Bowlen actually did something right in hiring Shanahan all those years ago...

Only the fact is that John and Jack Elway were pulling for the Shanahan hire, so it turns out that Bowlen actually is the idiot in the fur coat he's appeared to be all along!
