Josh McDaniels called for the onside kick in the middle of the third quarter, but it was recovered by San Diego. This marks an interesting strategic shift from the Mike Shanahan Era to the Josh McDaniels era. Shanahan rarely, if ever, tried special teams trick plays.
I don't like this gamble by McDaniels (especially because it didn't pay off). Denver had the momentum and the defense had a few good series in a row. The missed onside kick put the pressure back on the defense and returned the momentem to San Diego, who is now inches away from taking a 20-3 lead.
